Bill Boyd
Bolivar
Liberator of a Continent
An Historical Novel

General Simon Bolivar, the great South American freedom fighter, was the hero of his age and of this dramatic biographical novel. Children, streets, airports, cities, states, even a country are named for this remarkable man. Born one of the richest men in the Americas, he relinquished his wealth and titles to fight successfully for the independence of his continent from Spanish rule, leading victorious armies in more than 200 battles, across the Andes and across the continent. Bolivar freed slaves, proposed free education for the poor, and passed laws protecting wildlife and the environment. In 1828, he proposed building a canal through this isthmus of Panama. Later he tried to establish an Organization of the American States to settle regional disputes and for mutual protection. Bolivar takes readers on all of this dashing hero's adventures, but also explores the ideas for democracy and governance he introduced into the great South American continent.

William Young Boyd II was born in the Republic of Panama and has lived there most of his life. He is a scholar of Latin American history, and the author of several novels including The Gentle Infantryman as well as the new historical novel, Panama (Capital, 1999). Mr. Boyd's family firm, Boyd Steamship Corporation, has been in continuous existence in Panama for almost 100 years and is the premier ships agency at the Panama Canal.
